Quick answer: To clean a bong, empty the water, fill the piece with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt, cap the openings and shake, then let it soak. Rinse thoroughly with warm water until no alcohol smell remains, and let it air-dry before you refill it.

For adults 21 and over. This guide covers equipment only and makes no health claims. Follow your local laws.

A clean piece tastes better, pulls more evenly and lasts longer. Resin and stale water build up faster than most people expect, and the longer they sit, the harder the job gets. This guide shows the classic isopropyl-and-salt method, a faster ready-made-cleaner method, and how to adapt each one for glass, silicone and acrylic.

Safety first: work in a ventilated space, keep isopropyl alcohol away from flames, heat and children, never mix cleaning products, and let your piece cool and come to room temperature before you start. Sudden temperature changes can crack glass.

Signs your bong needs a deep clean

  • Visible brown or yellow resin on the neck, chamber or downstem.
  • Flavor tastes flat, stale or harsh compared with a fresh piece.
  • The draw feels restricted, or the water looks cloudy a few minutes after filling.
  • Ash or debris is stuck around the percolator or where the bowl seats.

If you notice any of these, it is time to clean, and the sooner the better because fresh residue comes off much more easily than hardened resin.

Own a colored piece? This routine is just as safe on pink bongs and other tinted glass, so you can keep the color looking fresh.

What you need

  • 99% isopropyl alcohol (or a ready-made glass cleaner). Our High-Purity Isopropyl Cleaner XL, 16 oz ($13.99) is a quick-drying option made for glass, metal and ceramic accessories.
  • Coarse salt (kosher or sea salt). It works as a gentle abrasive; table salt dissolves too fast.
  • Caps, silicone plugs or a zip bag to seal the openings so nothing leaks while you shake.
  • Brushes or swabs for the neck, downstem and bowl.
  • Warm water and a place to let the piece air-dry.

Materials needed to clean a bong: isopropyl alcohol, coarse salt and a brush

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Take it apart and empty it

Pour out the old water, then remove the bowl, downstem and any ash catcher. Pull off rubber grommets or o-rings if your piece has them. Tip loose debris into the trash, not the sink. If the water has been sitting for days, rinse the chamber with warm water first so you are not scrubbing through a lot of loose residue.

Step 2: Add isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt

Place the smaller parts in a zip bag. For the main chamber, add about a tablespoon of coarse salt, then pour in enough 99% isopropyl alcohol to cover the resin line (roughly a half cup to a cup for most mid-size pieces). More alcohol is not better; you only need enough for the liquid to reach every dirty surface when you tilt the piece.

Step 3: Seal, shake and soak

Cap every opening, or hold your palms over them, and shake for 30 to 60 seconds. The salt grinds against the glass and lifts resin as the alcohol dissolves it. Then let the piece soak for 20 to 30 minutes. For heavy buildup, soak longer and shake again halfway through.

Step 4: Scrub the stubborn spots

Use a brush or swab on the neck, around the percolator and inside the downstem, where salt cannot reach. For hard-to-reach areas, the Magnetic Resin Scrubber ($29.99) is listed as safe for glass, acrylic and silicone and as non-scratch, so you can guide it inside the piece from outside.

Step 5: Rinse until the alcohol smell is gone

Pour the used alcohol and salt into a disposable container as local rules allow, then rinse every part with warm (not hot) water several times. Keep rinsing until you can no longer smell alcohol or see salt grains. Residue left behind will change the flavor of your next session.

Step 6: Dry completely and reassemble

Stand the parts upside down or open on a clean towel and let everything air-dry fully, which usually takes an hour or more. Reassemble, add fresh water and you are done.

Quick method: ready-made cleaner

If you do not want to buy alcohol and salt, a ready-made cleaner is the fastest route. Fill the chamber with the cleaner as directed on the label, shake or soak for the time listed, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and do not mix products. See our cleaning solutions collection for options.

Cleaning by material

Material Best method Watch out for
Borosilicate glass Isopropyl and coarse salt, or a glass cleaner Avoid very hot water or sudden temperature swings that can crack the glass
Silicone Warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush; isopropyl for short soaks Rinse well, and check the maker's care notes before long soaks
Acrylic Mild soap and warm water, soft cloth Alcohol and strong solvents can cloud or crack some acrylic, so check first
Metal parts and screens Short isopropyl soak, then rinse Remove any rubber seals first

How often should you clean a bong?

  • Change the water: every session, or at least daily if you use it often.
  • Quick rinse and wipe-down: weekly.
  • Deep clean with alcohol and salt: every one to two weeks of regular use, or whenever you see a visible resin line or notice flavor fading.

Want a full schedule? Our daily, weekly and monthly cleaning routine covers bongs, rigs and pipes.

Make cleaning easier next time

  • Use an ash catcher to keep debris out of the main chamber, then clean it separately.
  • Swap worn bowls and downstems instead of scrubbing damaged ones.
  • Rinse with warm water right after you finish, while residue is still soft.
  • Browse the full bongs and water pipes collection if you are ready for a piece that is easier to take apart.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean a bong without isopropyl alcohol?

Yes. Warm water and a mild dish soap work for light buildup, or you can use a ready-made glass cleaner. Rinse very well, because leftover soap affects flavor. For heavier residue, alcohol and coarse salt or a dedicated cleaner is usually faster.

Does dish soap clean a bong?

Dish soap can handle fresh, light residue if you scrub and rinse thoroughly. It is less effective on hardened resin, which is why most people use isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt or a purpose-made cleaner.

Is it safe to boil a bong to clean it?

We do not recommend it. Putting glass into boiling water, or moving it between very hot and cold water, can crack it. Use room-temperature or warm water instead.

How long should I soak a bong?

Twenty to thirty minutes is typical for a regular clean. Heavy buildup may need an hour or a second round. Always follow the label if you use a ready-made cleaner.

Can I use table salt instead of coarse salt?

Coarse salt is better because the larger crystals scrub the glass as you shake. Table salt dissolves quickly and does very little abrasive work.

How do I clean a bong with a percolator?

Use the same method, but soak longer and scrub the percolator slits or arms with a thin brush or swab. A magnetic scrubber can help reach inside areas you cannot get to by hand.
