Glass adapters and joint converters let you mix and match bowls, downstems, and rigs of different sizes. If you've ever bought a new bowl only to discover it doesn't fit your bong, a joint adapter is the fix.
What sizes do glass adapters come in?
The three standard joint sizes are 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm — measured across the opening. Adapters convert between any two: a 14mm-to-18mm adapter lets you use a 14mm bowl on an 18mm bong, and vice versa.
Do adapters affect hit quality?
Minimally. A quality adapter adds a small amount of airflow resistance but doesn't meaningfully change hit size or flavor. The trade-off is worth it for compatibility — a single adapter opens your entire bong to bowls of any size.
Male vs. female adapters — how do I tell?
Look at your bong joint: if it has a ground-glass stem sticking out, it's a male joint (needs a female-fit bowl). If it has a hollow socket, it's female (needs a male bowl). Adapters are labeled 14mm male-to-18mm female, etc.
What's a drop-down adapter?
A drop-down extends your joint outward, moving the bowl (or banger) away from your face. Useful for dab rigs when you want more clearance between your torch flame and your hand — or simply to reposition a bowl for better sightlines.
