Spoon Pipes — Glass Spoon Hand Pipes
A spoon pipe is a small hand pipe shaped like its name — a round bowl at one end, a straight stem you draw from at the other, and a side carb hole you cover and release to clear the smoke. It is the simplest dry pipe there is: no water, no batteries, no setup. Below are the glass, wood and silicone spoon pipes we have in stock, from pocket 3-inch pieces to 5-inch worked glass, shipping fast from the US.
How to pick a spoon pipe
Four things decide how a spoon actually feels to use:
Length: 3" vs 4.5" vs 5"
A 3-inch spoon hides in a closed hand and travels well. A 4.5–5 inch spoon puts more distance between the bowl and your mouth, so the smoke arrives cooler. Most people land on 4 to 4.5 inches.
Glass thickness
Thick borosilicate survives being dropped and does not scorch your fingers when the bowl gets hot. Thin novelty glass is cheaper but chips at the mouthpiece and cracks under heat cycling.
Bowl depth & carb placement
A deep bowl holds a full load without needing a re-pack; a shallow one is easier to clear and clean. Check the carb sits where your thumb naturally falls — an awkward carb makes a nice pipe annoying.
Glass, wood or silicone
Glass tastes cleanest and shows resin build-up so you know when to clean. Wood adds a mellow note and will not shatter. Silicone is effectively indestructible and the right pick for hiking, festivals and clumsy hands.

How to pack and use a spoon pipe
Grind your dry herb medium-fine — too fine and it pulls through the bowl hole, too coarse and it will not stay lit. Pack the bowl lightly at the bottom and a little firmer on top so air still moves. Cover the side carb with your thumb, light the far edge of the bowl rather than the middle, and draw gently. Release the carb at the end of the draw to clear the stem in one pull. Rotating where you light it keeps the bowl burning evenly instead of tunneling straight down the center. A grinder makes more difference to how a spoon smokes than the price of the pipe does.
Spoon pipe vs the other hand pipes
Where a spoon sits against the neighboring styles:
Spoon vs chillum
A chillum is a straight tube with no carb — smaller and more discreet, but you cannot clear it mid-draw or control airflow. A spoon gives you the carb and a deeper bowl.
Spoon vs bubbler
A bubbler adds a small water chamber, so hits land noticeably cooler and smoother. It also has to be emptied, rinsed and carried upright. A spoon is the dry, grab-and-go option.
Spoon vs steamroller
A steamroller is an open-ended tube that delivers a much bigger, harsher hit fast. A spoon is the moderate everyday piece.
Spoon vs water pipe
A water pipe filters and cools far more and suits sessions at home. A spoon is what you put in a jacket pocket.
Keeping a spoon pipe clean
Resin narrows the stem and dulls the taste long before a pipe looks dirty. Soak the piece in isopropyl alcohol with a spoonful of coarse salt, shake it, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and let it dry fully before the next use. A pipe cleaner or cotton bud through the stem clears the bend where build-up starts. Doing this every week or two takes a minute; leaving it a month turns into a scraping job. Never run cold water into a hot bowl — the thermal shock is what cracks otherwise healthy glass. If you would rather spend less and replace more often, our pipes under $25 are the practical place to look.
Frequently asked questions
What is a spoon pipe?
A spoon pipe is a small hand pipe with a round bowl at one end, a straight stem to draw from at the other, and a carb hole on the side of the bowl. You cover the carb while you light and draw, then release it to clear the smoke out of the stem. It is the most common style of dry hand pipe.
Why does a spoon pipe have a hole on the side?
That hole is the carb (short for carburetor). Covering it while you draw pulls air through the bowl; uncovering it at the end lets fresh air rush in and clears the stale smoke from the stem, so you get the whole hit instead of leaving half of it in the pipe.
What size spoon pipe should I get?
Around 4 to 4.5 inches suits most people — long enough that the smoke cools on the way and short enough to pocket. Choose 3 inches if discretion and portability matter most, or 5 inches if you want the coolest draw a dry pipe can give.
Are glass spoon pipes fragile?
Thick borosilicate glass is far tougher than it looks and handles normal use and heat cycling fine, but any glass will break on a hard floor. If it is going to live in a bag or come outdoors, a silicone or wood spoon will outlast glass.
How do I clean a glass spoon pipe?
Soak it in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, shake, then rinse well with warm water and dry it completely. Run a pipe cleaner through the stem to clear the bend. Clean every one to two weeks — and never pour cold water into a hot bowl, which cracks glass.
Spoon pipe or bubbler — which is better?
Neither is better; they solve different problems. A spoon is dry, pocketable and needs no upkeep beyond cleaning. A bubbler runs the smoke through water for a cooler, smoother hit but has to be emptied and carried upright. Many people keep a spoon for out of the house and a bubbler for home.
