What is a Dab Rig?
A dab rig is a specialized water pipe designed for vaporizing cannabis concentrates like wax, shatter, budder, and live resin. Unlike traditional bongs that combust dry flower, dab rigs use a heated surface (called a nail or banger) to vaporize concentrates at high temperatures, delivering potent, flavorful hits.
Dab rigs are typically smaller than bongs because concentrate vapor does not need as much filtration. The compact size also helps preserve terpene flavors that would otherwise be lost in a larger piece.
Essential Dab Rig Components
The Rig Itself
The glass body that holds water for filtration and cooling. Most dab rigs feature a percolator for extra smoothness. Browse our dab rig collection to find the perfect piece.
Nail or Banger
The heating element where you place your concentrate. Options include:
- Quartz Bangers - Best flavor, fast heat-up, requires torch (shop quartz bangers)
- Titanium Nails - Most durable, retains heat well (shop titanium nails)
- Ceramic Nails - Clean taste, slower heat-up (shop ceramic nails)
- E-Nails - Electronic, precise temperature control (shop e-nails)
Carb Cap
A lid that covers the banger to trap heat and create convection. Essential for low-temperature dabs and maximizing flavor. Shop carb caps.
Dab Tool
A metal or glass tool used to handle sticky concentrates. Browse dabber tools.
Torch
A butane torch to heat the nail. Shop torches. Alternatively, use an e-nail for torch-free dabbing.
How to Use a Dab Rig: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Prepare Your Setup
- Fill your rig with water - just enough to cover the percolator
- Test the water level by inhaling (without heating) - it should bubble smoothly without splashing
- Attach your banger or nail securely to the joint
- Have your dab tool, carb cap, and concentrate ready
Step 2: Prepare Your Dab
Use your dab tool to scoop a small amount of concentrate - start with a piece about the size of a rice grain. You can always take more, but you cannot take less once it is in the banger.
Step 3: Heat the Nail
Point your torch at the bottom and sides of your banger. Heat until the quartz glows red (about 30-60 seconds depending on your torch and banger thickness).
Step 4: Let It Cool
This step is crucial for flavor and smoothness. Wait 30-60 seconds after heating before taking your dab. Cooler temperatures preserve terpenes and reduce harshness.
Temperature Guide:
- Low temp (315-450F) - Maximum flavor, lighter vapor, may leave residue
- Medium temp (450-600F) - Balance of flavor and vapor production
- High temp (600-900F) - Dense clouds, harsher hits, less flavor
Step 5: Apply the Concentrate
Touch your dab tool to the inside of the heated banger while slowly inhaling. Move the tool around to ensure all the concentrate vaporizes.
Step 6: Cap and Inhale
Immediately place your carb cap over the banger. This traps heat and creates convection, vaporizing any remaining concentrate. Continue inhaling steadily.
Step 7: Exhale and Clean
After exhaling, use a cotton swab to wipe the inside of your banger while it is still warm. This prevents residue buildup and keeps your banger tasting fresh.
Cold Start (Reverse) Dabbing Method
An alternative technique that is gentler and more beginner-friendly:
- Place your concentrate in the cold banger first
- Cover with carb cap
- Apply heat to the bottom of the banger with your torch
- Watch through the cap - when vapor starts forming, stop heating
- Inhale and enjoy
This method offers better temperature control and is easier for beginners to master.
Safety Tips
- Never touch a hot nail - Quartz retains heat longer than it appears
- Use a silicone mat - Protects surfaces and catches dropped tools
- Keep torches away from concentrates - They are flammable
- Dab in a well-ventilated area
- Start small - Concentrates are much more potent than flower
- Stay hydrated - Dabbing can cause dry mouth
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dabbing too hot - Wastes concentrate and burns your throat
- Not using a carb cap - Leaves concentrate unvaporized
- Skipping the cleaning swab - Leads to chazzed (burnt) bangers
- Taking too big of a dab - Start small and work up
- Using the wrong water level - Too much causes splashback
